Ghostbusters VR will be a game and not an experience, scale of campaign said to be “ambitious”

Last month, Ghostbusters fans received a surprise when, in addition to IllFonic’s upcoming Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, a second video game was revealed from nDreams entitled Ghostbusters VR.

If you couldn’t tell by the name, Ghostbusters VR will be a fully-fledged virtual reality release, and unlike past attempts, it is said to be an actual game.

In a new interview with Wccftech, nDreams CEO Patrick O’Luanaigh spoke about a variety of topics, with the most noteworthy, well, at least for us, centering around how Ghostbusters VR will differ from other Sony Pictures VR releases, with O’Luanaigh admitting, “This is definitely a game and not an experience.”

When pressed about the game’s overall length, O’Luanaigh stayed pretty tight-lipped but did mention that the game would be “ambitious.”

I’m afraid we don’t have that information to share at the moment. We’ll be giving that as soon as we can, but I don’t think people are gonna be disappointed with the scale of what we’re doing. It’s an ambitious game. And I think we’ve, we’ve said that it’s up to four players cooperative game, which is just perfect for Ghostbusters. If you imagine the original movie with the team going in together, getting that in VR is just gonna be so exciting.

As previously reported, Ghostbusters VR takes the series out of New York City, swapping it out with San Francisco, with O’Luanaigh calling it “a lovely setting,” also reiterating that you’ll be able to build your own Ghostbusters franchise “with up to four players.”

Sadly, with only a trailer released, information is still being kept under wraps, with some of the more hard-hitting questions being justifiably deflected.

Regarding the other Ghostbusters video game, Spirits Unleashed, O’Luanaigh commented on its asymmetrical 4v1 gameplay and teased future announcements surrounding Ghostbusters VR.

“I think it’s an interesting idea. To be honest with you, I don’t know much at all about the other game. I’ve seen what you’ve seen, the announcements that they’ve made. I’m super excited about Ghostbusters on any platform, so I’m sure it’ll be great. In terms of what we are making, there’s some very, very cool things. Lots of things that we haven’t announced in terms of the detail of the game and I’m so excited, I can’t wait to, I wish I could tell you more. I really do, but yeah, it’s gonna be very special.”

When it comes to availability, Ghostbusters VR has been announced for the Meta Quest 2. While a larger release is likely, nothing has been confirmed, with O’Luanaigh saying:

“I can’t say anymore other than obviously we’ve announced Ghostbusters VR with Meta on Quest 2. That’s not to say that it’s not possible elsewhere and there may be future announcements, but for now, I can’t say any more than that, I’m afraid.”

Ghostbusters VR has no set release date but is expected within the next year.
