‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ is one of Vudu’s most-watched films of 2022

Receiving a VOD release this past January, Ghostbusters: Afterlife would become one of the first films to top this year’s Vudu sales charts, even reclaiming the peak spot again in February, going on to become one of the most popular releases on the streaming service within 2022.

In today’s update, Vudu just released their end-of-year report, running down the year’s most-viewed films, with Ghostbusters: Afterlife landing in fourth place, sitting behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, Sing 2, and Top Gun: Maverick.


Most-Viewed Movies Debuting on Vudu in 2022:

  3. Top Gun: Maverick (Paramount Pictures) 
  4. Ghostbusters: Afterlife (Sony Pictures)
  5. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Paramount Pictures)
  6. Jurassic World: Dominion (Universal Pictures)
  7. Minions: The Rise of Gru (Universal Pictures)
  8. The Bad Guys (Universal Pictures)
  9. Uncharted (Sony Pictures)
  10. Morbius (Sony Pictures)

Considered a success by Sony Pictures, Ghostbusters: Afterlife saw a domestic opening weekend of $44m, surpassing $204m at the worldwide box office on a reported production budget of $75m.

A sequel, codenamed Firehouse, is slated to begin filming in the Spring of 2023, with Afterlife stars Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, and Finn Wolfhard thus far confirmed to return. The release of the supernatural follow-up is currently listed for December 20th, 20223.


In addition to the live-action sequel, Sony Pictures Animation is developing a separate feature, said to be “a whole new take.” An animated series is also in the works from Netflix and Ghost Corps, with Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman attached to produce.
