Original Real Ghostbusters promo art receives modern redesign

When Ghostbusters made the jump from live-action to animated series, an early piece of pre-production artwork was used that depicted a style much more in line with the big-screen adventure. This included the heroes wearing tan khaki flight suits, Egon retaining his dark hair and trademark quiff, and ill-tempered takes on two of the franchise’s most soon-to-be iconic characters, Slimer and The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Even more interesting is that two different renditions of the art are known to exist, that when compared next to one another, feature a few notable differences, among them Peter looking less like Bill Murray and Ray being subjected to a slight makeover, receiving an entirely new hairstyle.

Despite the characters and the overall tone getting overhauled before its premiere in the fall of 1986, the promo art was still used on everything from television food trays to Milton Bradley’s Ghostbusters board game, making it a favorite amongst longtime fans, including artist Dave Alvarez.

Alvarez, whose work we’ve previously highlighted, just shared his unique updated rendition of The Real Ghostbusters that, while taking heavy influence from the animated series with the foursome being joined by a friendly-looking Slimer, includes Afterlife‘s metal-devouring Muncher and the Ecto-1 that’ll be seen in next year’s untitled sequel.

Alongside the action-packed art, Alvarez shared a character sheet highlighting these fan-made redesigns, said to be done with “new audiences tastes” in mind. The body types used in the original animated series are further accentuated, with the biggest change coming from Winston, who’s seen the addition of a goatee and a new hairstyle.

It should be stated that while all of Alvarez’s work is merely fan art, the Ghostbusters will soon be making their official return to animation, as during last year’s Ghostbusters Day celebration, a full-length feature from Sony Pictures Animation and a new cartoon series at Netflix was said to be in production. Details on both projects are scarce outside of the film being helmed by Jennifer Kluska and Chris Prynoski and written by Brenda Hsueh, while the series will have the filmmaking duo of Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan serving as executive producers.

Earlier this year, images went viral from what was said to be an abandoned animated feature that would’ve cast ghosts and monsters as paranormal eliminators, with that full feature available here.
